Best Weekend RV Getaway from Houston: Freeport TX
Just 60 miles from Houston, Freeport and Surfside Beach offer the perfect Gulf Coast weekend escape. Here is how to plan a great RV trip from the Houston area.
Best Weekend RV Getaway from Houston: Freeport TX
Houston is a great city. But sometimes you need to get out of it.
If you have an RV and a free weekend, the Texas Gulf Coast is the obvious answer — and Freeport is the best-kept secret on that coast. At just 60 miles from downtown Houston, it is close enough to leave Friday afternoon and be set up at your site before dark. Far enough to feel like you actually went somewhere.
Here is how to make the most of a weekend RV trip from Houston to Freeport and Surfside Beach.
The Drive: Houston to Freeport
The route from Houston to Freeport is straightforward and RV-friendly. Take TX-288 South from Houston through Angleton, then TX-36 South into Freeport. The drive is mostly flat, four-lane highway with no tight turns or low bridges to worry about.
Drive time: 60–75 minutes from downtown Houston, depending on traffic. Leave by 3 PM on Friday to beat the worst of it.
Fuel: Fill up before you leave Houston or in Angleton — fuel prices in Freeport are reasonable, but having a full tank before you arrive means one less errand.
Groceries: There is a Walmart Supercenter in Lake Jackson, about 10 minutes from Freeport, that is easy to access in a large rig. Stock up on the way in if you plan to cook at your site.
Friday Evening: Arrive and Settle In
Pull into Austin's Landing RV Park Resort at 318 Thunder Road, get hooked up, and take a breath. The Gulf Coast air hits differently after a week in the city.
Friday evening is perfect for a low-key start. Set up your awning and chairs, crack open something cold, and listen to the sounds of the coast. If you are feeling ambitious, a short drive to Surfside Beach for a sunset walk is hard to beat.
Saturday: Make the Most of the Day
Morning: Fish or Beach Walk
Saturday morning is prime time on the Texas coast. Get up early and choose your adventure:
Fishing: The Freeport jetties are a short drive from Austin's Landing and offer excellent fishing for sheepshead, speckled trout, and flounder. If you have a kayak or small boat, the ICW and Christmas Bay are outstanding inshore options. Live bait from one of the local shops will put you in the best position.
Beach walk: Bryan Beach State Natural Area opens at sunrise and is free to access. It is one of the most peaceful stretches of Gulf shoreline in Texas — wide open sand, no crowds, and excellent shelling after a storm.
Midday: Explore Freeport and Surfside
Grab lunch at one of the local seafood spots in Surfside Beach or Freeport. Fresh Gulf shrimp, oysters, and redfish are local staples. Ask locals for their current favorites — the best places tend to be the ones that have been around for decades.
After lunch, explore the area at your own pace. The Freeport Municipal Marina is worth a walk-through — it is one of the largest on the Texas coast and always has interesting boats coming and going. The Brazos River mouth, visible from the south jetty, is a dramatic piece of Texas geography.
Afternoon: Wildlife and Nature
The Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is about 20 miles north of Freeport and is one of the premier wildlife viewing destinations on the Texas coast. The auto tour route is accessible in most vehicles and RVs (check road conditions before visiting with a large rig). Roseate spoonbills, great blue herons, alligators, and white-tailed deer are common sights.
If you prefer to stay closer to camp, the area around the Intracoastal Waterway offers excellent birdwatching from the bank — brown pelicans, cormorants, and various shorebirds are almost always present.
Evening: Sunset and Dinner
Surfside Beach faces southeast, so the sunsets over the Gulf are spectacular — especially in fall and winter when the air is clear. Plan to be on the beach or at the jetties around golden hour.
Dinner back at your site is a great option if you caught fish during the day. A simple fish fry with Gulf-fresh catch is one of the best meals you can have on the Texas coast.
Sunday: One More Morning Before the Drive Home
Do not waste Sunday morning. Get up early for one more beach walk or fishing session before you break camp. The drive back to Houston is easy and traffic is light on Sunday mornings.
Checkout tip: Most RV parks have a checkout time of 11 AM or noon. If you want more time, ask about a late checkout when you check in — many parks will accommodate it for a small fee or no charge at all.
Why Freeport Over Galveston for a Weekend Trip?
Galveston is the more famous Texas beach destination, but for an RV weekend, Freeport has real advantages:
- Less traffic: Galveston's causeway can back up badly on summer and fall weekends. The drive to Freeport is consistently smooth.
- Better fishing: The Freeport jetties and surrounding waters are widely considered superior inshore fishing to Galveston Bay.
- Lower prices: RV sites, fuel, and dining in Freeport are noticeably more affordable than Galveston's resort areas.
- Less crowded beaches: Bryan Beach and Surfside Beach are quieter and more spacious than Galveston's main beach on a busy weekend.
