Snowbird RV Living on the Texas Gulf Coast: A Guide

Every October, a quiet migration begins. RVers from Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and the northern Plains load up their rigs and point them south. Some head to Arizona. Some go to Florida. And a growing number discover what Gulf Coast Texans have always known: the upper Texas coast offers a winter experience that rivals either of those destinations — with smaller crowds, lower prices, and fishing that is hard to beat anywhere in the country.

If you are considering a snowbird season on the Texas Gulf Coast, here is what you need to know.

Why the Texas Gulf Coast for Snowbirds?

The Weather

Freeport and the Surfside Beach area sit at roughly the same latitude as Los Angeles. Winter temperatures are mild by any northern standard:

  • November: Average highs 68°F, lows 50°F
  • December: Average highs 63°F, lows 45°F
  • January: Average highs 61°F, lows 43°F
  • February: Average highs 65°F, lows 46°F

Hard freezes are rare and brief. Snow is essentially unheard of. You will need a jacket in the evenings, but you will not need to plug in your engine block heater.

The Gulf Coast does get occasional cold fronts — "northers" in local parlance — that can drop temperatures 20–30 degrees in a matter of hours. These typically pass within a day or two and are followed by beautiful, clear weather.

The Fishing

Winter is actually one of the best times to fish the Texas Gulf Coast. Speckled trout move into the bays and are highly active in cooler water. Redfish are present year-round. Sheepshead stack up around the Freeport jetties. And the offshore grounds hold red snapper and other species for those willing to make the run.

For serious anglers, a winter season based out of Freeport is a dream scenario: comfortable temperatures, less boat traffic, and fish that are actively feeding.

The Cost

The Texas Gulf Coast is significantly more affordable than South Padre Island, Galveston's resort areas, or comparable destinations in Florida. Monthly RV rates in the Freeport area start around $450 for a full-hookup site — a fraction of what you would pay for a comparable setup in the Florida Keys or the Arizona resort parks.

Groceries, dining, and fuel are also priced at Texas levels, which tend to be lower than coastal resort markets elsewhere.

The Lack of Crowds

The upper Texas coast does not attract the same volume of winter tourists as South Padre or the Florida Gulf Coast. That means less traffic, shorter waits at restaurants, and a more relaxed pace of life. If you value a quiet, unhurried winter season over resort amenities and nightlife, this is a significant advantage.

Planning Your Snowbird Season

When to Arrive and Depart

Most Gulf Coast snowbirds arrive in late October or early November, after the peak of hurricane season (which officially ends November 30) and before the first serious cold fronts. Departure typically happens in late March or April, when northern destinations become livable again.

The sweet spot for Gulf Coast weather is November through March — mild temperatures, low humidity, and excellent fishing conditions.

Booking Your Site

Monthly sites at popular Gulf Coast RV parks fill up, especially for the prime November–March window. Contact parks in August or September to check availability and reserve your spot. A deposit is typically required to hold a monthly site.

At Austin's Landing RV Park Resort, we welcome snowbird guests for monthly stays starting at $450. Call (979) 239-1923 early in the season to check availability.

What to Bring

The Gulf Coast winter is mild, but you will want:

  • Layering options: Mornings and evenings can be cool, especially after a cold front
  • Rain gear: Winter fronts bring rain, sometimes heavy
  • Fishing gear: This is not optional if you are doing it right
  • Binoculars: The birding is exceptional from November through March
  • A good book: Some days the weather is perfect for doing absolutely nothing

Healthcare and Services

Freeport and the surrounding Brazoria County area have medical facilities, pharmacies, and specialist services. The Houston Medical Center — one of the largest medical complexes in the world — is about an hour north for anything requiring specialist care.

What to Do During a Winter Season

A winter season on the Texas Gulf Coast is not a passive experience. Between fishing, birding, beach walks, day trips, and the social life that develops in any good RV park, the days fill up quickly.

Fishing: Inshore trout and redfish fishing peaks in winter. The Freeport jetties, Christmas Bay, and the ICW all produce well.

Birding: The Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge hosts hundreds of thousands of wintering waterfowl from November through February. The annual Freeport Christmas Bird Count is one of the highest species counts in North America.

Day trips: Houston is an hour north and offers world-class museums, dining, and entertainment. Galveston is 45 minutes away. San Antonio is about three hours.

Beach walks: Bryan Beach and Surfside Beach are quiet and uncrowded in winter — perfect for long morning walks with a coffee.
