Gulf Coast Fishing Near Freeport, TX: A Complete Guide
If fishing is on your agenda, you picked the right stretch of Texas coastline. The waters around Freeport and Surfside Beach are some of the most productive inshore and nearshore fishing grounds on the entire Gulf of Mexico. Whether you are a seasoned angler or casting a line for the first time, there is something here for everyone.
This guide covers the best spots, target species, seasons, and tips for making the most of your fishing trip while staying at Austin's Landing RV Park Resort.
Why Freeport Is a Fishing Hotspot
Freeport sits at the mouth of the Brazos River, where freshwater meets the Gulf of Mexico. This confluence creates a nutrient-rich environment that attracts baitfish — and the predators that follow them. Add in the Freeport Ship Channel, the Bryan Beach flats, and easy access to nearshore reefs, and you have a world-class fishery right at your doorstep.
The area is also home to the Freeport Municipal Marina, one of the largest on the Texas coast, making it easy to launch a boat or hire a charter.
Top Target Species
Speckled Trout (Spotted Seatrout)
Speckled trout are the bread-and-butter fish of Texas inshore anglers. They are found year-round in the bays and flats around Freeport, with peak action in spring and fall when water temperatures are in the 65–75°F range.
Work the grass flats near Bryan Beach and the back bays of Christmas Bay with soft plastic lures, topwater plugs, or live shrimp under a popping cork.
Redfish (Red Drum)
Redfish are arguably the most exciting inshore target on the Gulf Coast. They fight hard, grow large, and can be found in shallow water where you can sight-cast to them.
Look for reds tailing on the flats near the Intracoastal Waterway or cruising the shoreline at Bryan Beach. Slot fish (18–28 inches) are the most common, and the area regularly produces oversized "bull reds" in the fall.
Flounder
Flounder are a favorite for the table. They ambush prey from the bottom, so slow presentations near structure — jetties, channel edges, and grass beds — are most effective. Fall is prime flounder season as they migrate toward the passes.
Sheepshead
Sheepshead congregate around structure year-round. The Freeport jetties, dock pilings, and bridge supports hold good numbers. Use fiddler crabs or sand fleas on a small hook near the structure.
Offshore Species
If you have access to a boat or want to book a charter, the offshore waters off Freeport hold red snapper, king mackerel, cobia, and mahi-mahi. The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary is about 100 miles offshore and offers world-class reef fishing and diving.
Best Fishing Spots Near Freeport
Bryan Beach State Natural Area
Bryan Beach is a free, undeveloped stretch of Gulf shoreline just minutes from Austin's Landing. Surf fishing here can be excellent for whiting, pompano, and occasional redfish. The beach is also a great spot for crabbing with a simple drop net.
Freeport Jetties
The north and south jetties at the Freeport Ship Channel are among the most productive fishing structures on the upper Texas coast. Sheepshead, flounder, and speckled trout stack up around the rocks. Access is free from the shore, or you can fish from a kayak or small boat.
Christmas Bay
Christmas Bay, just north of Surfside Beach, is a designated Coastal Preserve and one of the clearest, most pristine bays on the Texas coast. It is a wade-fishing paradise for speckled trout and redfish, with extensive seagrass beds that hold fish year-round.
Intracoastal Waterway
The ICW runs parallel to the coast and provides consistent fishing for a variety of species. Bank fishing is possible at several access points, and kayak anglers can cover miles of productive water.
Fishing Licenses and Regulations
All anglers 17 and older need a Texas fishing license. You can purchase one online at the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website or at local bait shops in Freeport. Saltwater anglers also need a saltwater fishing endorsement.
Bag and size limits change periodically, so always check current TPWD regulations before heading out.
Local Bait Shops and Charters
Several bait shops in Freeport and Surfside Beach carry live and cut bait, tackle, and local knowledge. The staff at these shops are usually happy to share what is biting and where.
Charter fishing is also popular out of the Freeport Marina. Half-day and full-day inshore and offshore trips are available for groups of all sizes.
